Devin Haney once flirted with the idea of heading up to the welterweight division and while he’s since backed away from that move, Brian Norman Sr. hasn’t forgotten.
“We would love to fight Devin Haney,” said an amped-up Norman Sr. to Tha Boxing Voice recently. “We would love the opportunity. We would love to welcome him to 147.”
Since he essentially came out of the womb, Brian Norman Jr. has been bred to fight. The Ring’s No. 5 ranked welterweight and current WBO belt holder had a few rough moments along the way but becoming a world champion made it all worth it.
His options are now left, right, and center. Eimantas Stanionis has the WBA title and Mario Barrios clutches the division’s WBC strap. Either of those fights makes sense but if Team Norman can get their hands on Jaron Ennis and his IBF belt, they’ll be the happiest duo around.
So why mention the Haney name? Well, for starters, the former two-division champ and one-time undisputed titlist is one of the biggest names in all of boxing. Knocking him off would be fun but Norman Sr. acknowledges that Haney has a number of things to deal with at present.
When last seen, Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) was peeling himself up off the mat on several occasions, thanks to numerous Ryan Garcia left hooks. Haney is now eyeing a comeback fight and ultimately revenge later this year. Norman Sr. respects where Haney is coming from so won’t poke the 26-year-old too much.
A matchup with Haney is practically a pipe dream but Ennis isn’t. Ranked No. 1 by The Ring, Ennis is attempting to pilfer every 147-pound championship. Norman Sr., as a result, wants to throw his son in with Ennis and put a showdown with Haney on hold...at least for now.
“Devin got his own issues going on. He got enough problems. We not gonna go shooting at Dev. We want Jaron Ennis. That’s the bottom line, we want him next.”
