Light heavyweight contender Atif Oberlton earned one of the most impressive wins of his career, stopping Carlos Gongora after five rounds on Saturday night at Gateway Center Arena in College Park, Georgia.
Oberlton-Gongora was elevated to the main event on Friday night after Angelo Leo versus Ra’eese Aleem for Leo’s IBF featherweight title was cancelled due to Aleem missing weight by nearly three pounds. Gongora was a late replacement for Steven Sumpter on two weeks’ notice.
Oberlton (16-0, 14 KOs) found his groove in the second round, utilizing his height and reach advantage to keep Gongora (22-4, 17 KOs) at the end of his punches while landing hard left hands to the head and body on the inside. The 27-year-old southpaw from Philadelphia also landed a looping left hand that appeared to rock Gongora around the midway point of the round.
It was more of the same in the third, as Oberlton continued to pepper the Ecuadorian southpaw with his jab and power shots to the head and body.
In the fourth round, Oberlton dropped Gongora, 37, with a looping left hand. Gongora protested with the referee, Nate Mann, as he did for much of the fight, that it was a push rather than a knockdown.
Tempers nearly boiled over at the end of the fourth round, as after the bell, Oberlton and Gongora went forehead to forehead. Oberlton shoved Gongora, and they had to be separated by Mann. They received a stern warning at the start of the fifth round.
Oberlton continued to have success and landed a pair of straight left hands that snapped Gongora’s head back late in the fifth. Not long after the end of the round, Gongora’s corner stopped the fight.
The win made Oberlton the first fighter to stop Gongora. Gongora went 10 rounds in decision defeats to undefeated super middleweight contender Lester Martinez and WBC super middleweight champion Christian Mbilli.
Oberlton entered the fight ranked No. 7 by the WBA and No. 13 by the IBF.
Taylor Stops Barnett In Second Round
In the bout before Oblerton beat Gongora, heavyweight prospect Pryce Taylor (12-0, 8 KOs) turned in a dominant performance in the first-scheduled 10-round bout of his career.
After a chaotic first round in which the Brooklyn, New York, native get rocked by a right hook from Calvin Barnett (7-5, 4 KOs), Taylor found his groove in the second round and won by technical knockout. Taylor, 29, ravaged Barnett to the body and started to connect with big shots upstairs as the round progressed.
Barnett tired and winged power shots as the round progressed. With the end of the round near, Taylor landed a final flurry that sent Barnett to the canvas.
An exhausted Barnett beat the count, but his corner stopped the fight shortly after the round ended.
Lozada Dominates Dionicius In 8-Rounder
Junior featherweight prospect Ashleyann Lozada (4-0, 1 KO) delivered a dominant performance, dropping the much more experienced Debora Anahi Dionicius (36-8, 6 KOs) twice on her way to an eight-round, unanimous points victory.
Lozada won 80-70, 80-70 and 79-71 across the judges’ scorecards.
Lozada dropped Dionicius early in the second round with a looping left hand. Later in the round, Lozada knocked Dionicius down again with a right hook that did much more damage than the previous knockdown.
Dixon Defeats Nore By Unanimous Decision
In a close and competitive fight, super middleweight Casey Dixon (7-0, 5 KOs) did enough to hand Matthew Nore (2-1, 1 KO) his first defeat. Dixon won 59-55, 58-56 and 58-56 on the judges’ scorecards.
