The 20-year-old Dubliner decided he would entrust his future to Paul Stevenson.

Stevenson is known for his work with former WBA featherweight champion Nick Ball, but the Liverpool-based trainer has been churning out championship level fighters from his Everton Red Triangle Gym for years.

Stevenson’s roll of honour is too long to list but as well as Ball, he has produced the likes of Kevin Satchell, Jazza Dickens, Ryan Farrag, Peter McGrail and Andrew Cain.

The majority of his success may have come below featherweight but Stevenson is far more than a specialist in the lower weight divisions. He is one of the most knowledgeable, detail-orientated trainers in British boxing.

Olaniyan looked beyond who Stevenson has achieved his success with, examining the way he has done it.

The partnership have their third outing together against Argentina’s Jonathan Claudio Sauceo (5-2, 1 KO) on this weekend's Queensberry show in Dublin exclusively on DAZN. Olaniyan couldn’t be happier with his choice.

“I don't think it makes much of a difference. Big guy, small guy, Paul’s boxing brain is on an absolute different planet, you know. I've never had a conversation with anybody about boxing who's as insightful, knows as much about boxing as Paul,” Olaniyan (2-0, 2 KOs) told The Ring.

“The man lives, breathes, sleeps everything boxing so to be coached by such an amazing brain, I’ve even noticed in myself how much I'm improving, getting better, how much Paul has added to my game, fixing little holes and little mistakes.

“We’re only seven months in and I'm a completely different fighter than the one that walked into the gym on the first day. It’s an exciting journey for myself in the ERT but it's a bright one and I'm looking forward to it.”

Stevenson will put endless hours into perfecting the mechanics of Olaniyan’s stance, jab, right hand and left hook.

He will make sure his head is in the right place during clinches, help him settle on an ideal fighting weight and send him into each and every fight with a rock solid tactical plan.

The instinct to finish somebody isn’t something that can be taught but every fighter from the ERT seems to have a natural ruthless, cold streak.

In the world of heavyweight boxing where one shot can change the course of an entire career, it is imperative that a fighter gets their work done in the cleanest, most economical way possible.

The friendly, amiable Olaniyan has been in the gym for seven months and the business-like atmosphere has started to seep into him. He is developing a crucial nasty streak.

“I don't think I had it before but obviously, going to the gym you have Cain hitting the heavy bag as if it owes him money, Ball smashing every single heavy bag and every single sparring partner in the gym. Me just seeing that and being in that environment, it wouldn't take long for it to bring that out of anybody,” he said.

“The environment is just full of killers and I think I needed an environment like that because I'm starting to notice a bit of it myself.

“It's starting to come out nicely. I can't wait when I'm knocking on the door for world titles, it's out fully and I'm wrecking the place really so I'm looking forward to it.”
