ORLANDO – Just over one year ago, Omari Jones made his pro debut in his hometown at Caribe Royale.
The 2024 Olympic bronze medalist returned home Saturday night and delivered a dominant performance in the first eight-round bout of his career. Jones (6-0, 4 KOs) thoroughly outboxed Christian Gomez by unanimous decision in a junior middleweight bout, the co-feature on the Carlos Adames-Austin “Ammo” Williams undercard.
Adames later defended his WBC middleweight title against Williams in DAZN’s main event.
The three judges scored Jones’ fight a shutout, 80-72 apiece. Jones has won consecutive bouts by unanimous decision after beginning his career with four straight knockouts. After the fight, Jones said he believes the performance against Gomez was the best of his career.
Jones utilized his advantages in height, speed and reach from the opening bell. He kept Gomez at bay with a stiff jab and was able to punch through Gomez’s guard with power shots.
Jones was more aggressive and stood his ground early in the fight, darting in and out of range. As the fight progressed, Jones moved and leaned on his jab much more in the latter half as he coasted to victory.
The loss was Gomez’s third in a row and fifth in his last six fights, including a unanimous-decision defeat to The Ring’s No. 7-ranked welterweight, Shakhram Giyasov (17-0, 10 KOs) in 2022.
Marksman Outpoints Gomez
Corey Marksman and Jaycob Gomez entered the ring seeking a contract with Matchroom Boxing.
After 10 rounds, it was Marksman who left with a deal in hand.
Marksman (13-0-1, 9 KOs) earned the most important win of his career, beating Gomez (14-1-1, 8 KOs) by unanimous decision in a competitive 10-round bout between unbeaten lightweights that felt closer than the final scorecards indicated. Judges Braddan Jackson and James O’Connor had it 98-92, and Rodolfo Aguilar scored the fight 96-94.
Marksman and Gomez had their moments in the opening rounds. As the fight progressed, Marksman’s skill and speed helped him pull away as he connected with the bigger and more meaningful shots.
Gomez found some momentum in the eighth round, connecting with a pair of big straight left hands. It was short-lived for the Puerto Rican, as the Sanford, Florida, native froze him with a right hook and landed several significant power shots to take back control.
Teremoana Knocks Out Harper In 1st Round
Teremoana Teremoana (10-0, 10 KOs) secured the ninth first-round knockout of his career with his devastating finish of Curtis Harper (19-13, 13 KOs) in their eight-round heavyweight bout.
The 2024 Olympian from Australia was calculated for much of the opening stanza. Then, in the final seconds, Teremoana found his range with a jab before connecting with a devastating straight right hand that sent Harper crumbling to the canvas.
Referee Christopher Young halted the bout without a count with one second left in the opening round.
The first-round knockout was Teremoana’s seventh in a row. Teremoana, 28, will return to the ring April 29 on the undercard of Skye Nicolson versus Mariah Turner in Australia.
