The pair finally looked to be on track to finalize a junior middleweight clash for April in Las Vegas, and though a resolution could be found this week, negotiations hit an impasse after a Nevada judge granted Golden Boy Promotions, Ortiz's promoter, a temporary restraining order (TRO) against Ortiz.

The order stops Ortiz, of Grand Prairie, Texas, from entering into third-party contracts for a bout with Ennis, after it was reported Matchroom Boxing were looking to tie up a deal to match Ennis and Ortiz for a fight at Vegas' T-Mobile Arena, likely on April 18.

Ortiz filed a federal lawsuit against Golden Boy on January 16, requesting the judge to terminate his promotional agreement with Oscar De La Hoya's company.

Ortiz, The Ring's No. 1 junior middleweight, is desperate for the Ennis fight to happen, as is streaming service DAZN, whose contract with Golden Boy ended on December 31. Ortiz signed a new deal with Golden Boy in May 2024 and argues the agreement allowed him to sever ties with the company if their broadcast partnership with DAZN ever came to an end. Golden Boy has retorted that they are in active negotiations with DAZN regarding a renewal that covers 2026 and 2027.

Regardless, DAZN wants a resolution before Friday, when a judge is expected to rule on the TRO. If the fight does go ahead, Matchroom will be the sole promoters of the show. If it doesn't, Golden Boy's future with DAZN remains uncertain and their planned March 14 event, due to be headlined by Arnold Barboza Jr. and Kenneth Sims, will be canceled.
