A rematch between Oscar Valdez and Miguel Berchelt, two former champions trying to remain relevant, could happen next year.
Oscar Valdez unseated long-reigning WBC junior lightweight champion Miguel Berchelt in 2021 with a brutal ninth-round knockout.
Almost five years later, the former Mexican champions and current contenders could be keen to run it back as they look to revive their careers, as both have hit their fair share of pitfalls since their slugfest came to a close.
Officials from Zanfer Boxing, who represent Berchelt, told The Ring that there is mutual interest from both sides to potentially set up a sequel sometime in the coming year.
Valdez manager Frank Espinoza told The Ring that they'd be open to the fight, as long as it's on the right terms.
"Oscar has had a great career, and we're looking forward to making the best fights for him moving forward," said Espinoza.
The move and potential matchup could shape up to be an ideal one, as Valdez, 34, and Berchelt, 33, aim to revive their careers and re-enter the mix.
Berchelt (41-3, 36 KOs) suffered another stoppage loss to Jeremia Nakathila in 2022 following the devastating knockout against Valdez. But he’s since racked up four wins in a row in Mexico, albeit against overmatched journeymen. The most recent victory came in October.
Valdez (33-3, 24 KOs), a former two-division titleholder and a two-time Mexican Olympian, successfully defended the belt he took from Berchelt only once by beating Robson Conceicao in 2021 before losing to Shakur Stevenson in 2022. Valdez has alternated wins and losses ever since, with the defeats coming twice against Emanuel Navarrete.
After getting stopped in six rounds in the sequel against Navarrete in December, Valdez's promoter Bob Arum called for his fighter to retire and train fighters.
Instead, Valdez ended his run with coach Eddy Reynoso and reunited with Manny Robles to take a tune-up tilt last month in Mexico and scored a 10-round unanimous decision against Richard Medina.
