Panya Pradabsri and Carlos Canizales battle for the right to fill the void left behind by one of the sport's very best fighters.
The pair of former titleholders both made weight for their vacant WBC junior flyweight title fight. Thailand's Pradabsri (43-2, 27 KOs) weighed 107.8 pounds, while Venezuela's Canizales was well under the limit at 107.4 pounds.
Their scheduled 12-round, junior flyweight titlist takes place Thursday evening local time at Rajadamnern Stadium in Pradabsri's hometown of Bangkok, Thailand.
The winner will claim the WBC title left behind by former Ring Magazine/unified 108-pound champion Kenshiro Teraji (24-1, 15 KOs) earlier this summer. Teraji is now The Ring No. 2 flyweight and the division's WBC titlist.
Canizales (27-2-1, 19 KOs) came up just short in his 108-pound championship bid against Teraji earlier this year in Osaka, Japan. Their Fight of the Year contender saw the visiting boxer from Caracas fall on the wrong end of a majority decision.
He rebounded with a July 19 majority decision win over Mexico's Ivan Garcia (12-3-1, 4 KOs) in Caracas.
Canizales previously held a secondary version of the WBA 108-pound title, and is The Ring's No. 5 junior flyweight contender.
Pradabsri (43-2, 27 KOs)—better known to hardcore boxing fans as Petchmanee CP Freshmart—previously held the WBC strawweight title. He remains ranked No. 6 at 105 by The Ring, although his past three bouts have taken place above weight and against meager competition.
It was still enough to gain a favorable ranking with the WBC in time to challenge for his second divisional title.
The bout will air live on True 4U TV in Thailand beginning at 6:00 p.m. local time, and ESPN Knockout in Latin America beginning at 6:00 a.m. ET.
