MANCHESTER, England - Pat Brown passed his most serious test to date as he broke down and stopped the Czech Republic's Vacil Ducar (19-8-2, 14 KOs) in eight rounds in front of a passionate home crowd at Altrincham's Planet Ice arena.
The 26-year-old cruiserweight has stormed through the first twelve months of his professional career and a series of five increasingly dominant wins led many to pronounce him as a future cruiserweight world champion.
Brown (6-0, 6 KOs) hasn’t allowed himself to get swept away by the praise and marked his first year anniversary with a definite but sensible step up in opposition.
Ducar has been a regular visitor to Britain and has taken former WBO champion, Chris Billam-Smith-Smith, Cheavon Clarke and Jordan Thompson the 10-round distance.
During the week, Brown took the opportunity to remind people that 36-year-old Ducar was far more than a tough guy who had been drafted in to absorb a prolonged beating.
After a quiet opener, Brown immediately found a home for his right hand in the second. Whereas Brown's previous opponents have frozen, Ducar moved off to the side, poked out a jab or right hand, forcing Brown to reset. Although on the back foot, Ducar found a number of rights of his own in the third, including an uppercut that snapped Brown's head back.
Brown established his own right uppercut in the fifth and ended the round by dropping Ducar with a left hook to the body, helping him down with a left to the head.
Now in survival mode, Ducar was clearly still feeling the impact of the shot throughout the sixth and was bundled over by a left, high on the head.
Before the fight, Brown said that whilst he was looking forward to showcasing the boxing skills that earned him a national amateur title and a place a the 2024 Olympic Games, he wouldn’t hesitate to chase a finish if he saw the opportunity.
He went hunting for his man. He put together a sustained assault in the seventh bur Ducar found a clean right hand to prevent the referee from stepping in.
The fight came to a sudden, strange ending in the eighth.
Ducar absorbed yet another left hook to the body and dipped.
Whether his knee touched the canvas or not, referee, Michael Alexander, decided he had seen enough and stopped the fight.
After the fight, unbeaten English cruiserweight champion, John Hedges, entered the ring and stated his willingness to fight Brown but the Mancunian declared that he wanted the fight to take place tonight and that the ship has sailed.
Elsewhere on the bill...
William Crolla (10-1, 8 KOs) produced a stunning turnaround to knock out Ireland's Glenn Byrne (7-1-1, 1 KO) in the seventh round.
Crolla was dropped four times and hurt on many other occasions but dropped a tiring Byrne with a massive left hook to dramatically end matters.
Byrne left the ring on a stretcher but appeared conscious as he left the arena.
Other results:
- Robbie Colman (7-1, 1 KO) def. Josh Blenkiron (8-0-1) by split decision.
