Pat McCormack erred on the side of caution when asked about what's next, minutes after outboxing world-level operator Miguel Parra from the first bell to the visitor's corner retirement following nine grueling rounds in their Houghton-le-Spring headlin...
Pat McCormack won virtually every minute before an impressive finish of Miguel Parra after nine completed rounds in a WBA welterweight title eliminator Saturday in Houghton le Spring, England.
The 30-year-old McCormack, an Olympic silver medalist in Tokyo four years ago, said afterward that he was "buzzing" and owed the victory to coaches Ben Davison and Lee Wylie, who got their tactics spot on against a tough world-level contender.
"He was tough, kept coming, was small, but I broke him down," McCormack said. "He was in the top 15, got him out of there. Some of the shots were bouncing off him, but he was definitely the toughest [McCormack has fought].
"It was a good experience, I've only been 10 [rounds] once, but was getting stronger as time went."
McCormack was all over Parra in the early going. And after investing downstairs, he chained together three- and four-punch combinations in round 7 – almost angrily – having been docked a point for straying low a round earlier.
Parra gamely returned fire, but McCormack had him on unsteady legs, though the fog soon cleared. The Mexican, armed with a high guard, kept plodding forward into danger, and was keenly tagging the Sunderland man with two-punch combinations himself.
McCormack then emptied the tank and looked a punch or two away from the finish as referee John Latham intently watched on behind his shoulder.
An untimely slip on one of the advertising logos on the canvas stopped his rhythm mid-combination, though the end mercifully came from the visitor's corner between rounds.
Matchroom CEO Frank Smith, in place of Eddie Hearn, who was some 6,000-miles away overseeing Eduardo Nunez's first world championship defence in Mexico, admitted a British title bout between McCormack and promotional stablemate Conah Walker was of interest - but they have options aplenty after another impressive display.
"McCormack-Walker is a brilliant fight, if we can make it happen, but there are a lot of international names, and Pat's ready for them all," Smith said. "If he's going to win world titles in 12 to 14 months, we'll step him up and deliver."
