Considering how fast things move in boxing, all you have to do is blink once and you might miss something.
Roughly a year ago, Isaac Cruz became world champion thanks to his win over Rolly Romero. Fast forward to today, and Cruz’s belt is now gone and Romero is the one sporting a new crown.
On the night of their fight, Cruz treated Romero like he didn't belong. From the moment the opening bell rang, it was one-way traffic, leading to a violent stoppage win in the eighth round.
Once Romero got back on track against Manuel Jaimes, he took on Ryan Garcia in New York’s Times Square earlier this year on The Ring's second card. Nothing was expected of him, other than a few funny punchlines. But even that was different. Romero didn’t talk much during the lead up. He dominated Garcia.
Cruz, from his palatial estate, watched as Romero outworked, outclassed and outgunned Garcia. Considering the damage he dished out, he almost couldn’t believe that Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) was able to get it done.
“I was shocked,” Cruz said to Fight Hub TV. “Rolly wasn't running his mouth like usual. I’m glad he bounced back after that beating we gave him.”
Now, Cruz (27-3-1, 18 KOs) wants to follow in his footsteps. He’s taking on Angel Fierro in a rematch on July 19 and hopes that a win over him will lead to bigger and better things.
For now, the come forward and popular star has only Fierro on his mind, but a part of him does think about his future. Seeing Romero in the ring again is something he didn’t believe would happen, but since he looked as sharp as ever and is one of the hottest names in the sport, Cruz is willing to run things back immediately.
“If he wants a rematch, I’m more than ready.”
