Dalton Smith’s pursuit of a successful first defense of his WBC 140-pound title will come against a mainstay in the division.
Smith returns to his hometown to face Alberto Puello at Utilita Arena in Sheffield, England, on Saturday. The 12-round bout will stream on DAZN (2 p.m. ET/7 p.m. BST).
Smith (19-0, 14 KOs), The Ring’s No. 1-ranked junior welterweight, became the WBC 140-pound champion with a fifth-round stoppage of Subriel Matias at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on January 10. He was originally scheduled to face Puello, The Ring’s No. 3-ranked junior welterweight, on June 6 but withdrew due to an elbow injury.
Puello (25-1, 11 KOs) is a two-time world champion at 140 pounds. His last title reign ended with a razor-thin majority decision defeat to Matias in June 2025. Puello opted for a stay-busy bout after Smith’s withdrawal, and scored a fourth-round stoppage of Miguel Angel Bolano on July 18 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
