Few weekends are more synonymous with boxing than Cinco De Mayo.
Canelo Alvarez has dominated that weekend for the last 10 years. However this year, another Mexican star will be showcased on that date.
David Benavidez will challenge fellow Mexican Gilberto Ramirez for his WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles on Saturday, May 2 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Prime Video PPV. The fight is also available on DAZN PPV, or free-to-air for those already subscribed to the DAZN Ultimate plan.
Benavidez (31-0, 25 KOs), The Ring's No. 8-ranked pound-for-pound fighter, holds the WBC light heavyweight title and will make his cruiserweight debut after a seventh-round stoppage of Anthony Yarde in his first 175-pound defense on Nov. 22.
Ramirez (48-1, 30 KOs), a former super middleweight world champion, has gone 4-0 as a cruiserweight en route to becoming a unified champion. He last fought on June 28, beating Yuniel Dorticos by unanimous decision.
Benavidez and Ramirez sparred on numerous occasions early in their careers and both said they were PPV-worthy rounds. What happens when they take off the headgear, 16-ounce gloves and meet on Cinco De Mayo weekend?
Who wins: Benavidez vs. Ramirez?
