Lester Martinez and Joeshon James are back in each other’s sights.
The pair of unbeaten super middleweights will meet on a Feb. 8 ProBox TV card, event handlers confirmed Tuesday. The rescheduled bout is paired with a WBA junior featherweight title eliminator between The Ring No. 9 contender Ramon Cardenas and Bryan Acosta.
Martinez (18-0, 15 KOs) and James (9-0-2, 5 KOs) were previously due to meet on Sept. 11 at ProBox TV Events Center in Plant City, Florida. They even made weight for their planned main event. However, Guatemala’s Martinez fell ill shortly after the official weigh-in and was forced to withdraw.
Efforts were made to reschedule the bout for later in the year, but never previously materialized until Tuesday’s announcement.
Martinez was the The Ring No. 10 super middleweight contender until he was bumped out earlier this month. He enjoyed a breakout year of sorts prior to his second-half inactive stretch.
Attention was paid to the Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntryre-trained contender after his June 28 decision win over veteran contender Carlos Gongora (22-3, 17 KOs) in Washington D.C. The distance fight snapped a five-fight knockout streak but remains Martinez’ most significant victory to date.
James has fought just once in 2024, a year that was supposed to elevate his career after a hard-luck 2023 campaign.
The 26-year-old Sacramento, California native was held to back-to-back draws in his first two fights last year. He turned heads with a first-round knockout of unbeaten David Stevens (13-0 at the time), a Golden Boy prospect. The feat took place on a Golden Boy-promoted show last Oct. 21 in Inglewood, California.
James added an eight-round decision over longtime gatekeeper Vaughn Alexander (18-8-1 at the time) on a Feb. 16 ProBox TV show in Plant City. He’s spent the rest of the year training for a fight with Martinez that never quite saw the light of day.
San Antonio’s Cardenas (25-1, 14 KOs) has knocked out his last four opponents. His most impressive to date came in a second-round blitzing of unbeaten Rafael Pedroza last Sept. 15 at home in San Antonio. The feat topped the last-ever installment of Showtime’s long-running ShoBox prospect-based series.
Two wins were added, both in 2024. Cardenas has nought fought since a ninth-round stoppage of Jesus Ramirez last April 24 in Plant City.
Acosta (20-0, 8 KOs) will make his U.S. debut. He last fought in a third-round knockout of overmatched Maximino Toala on Feb. 10 in home state of Sonora, Mexico.
