Alexis Rocha took the best punches Raul Curiel could land Saturday night, but he couldn’t take Curiel’s ‘0.’
The left-handed Rocha won their 12-round welterweight fight on one scorecard, but he settled for a majority draw in a main event DAZN streamed from Toyota Arena in Ontario, California. Judges Lou Moret and Fernando Villarreal scored their bout even, 114-114 apiece, which overruled the score of judge Pat Russell, who had it 116-112 for Rocha.
CompuBox’s unofficial statistics indicated Rocha-Curiel was as close as Moret and Villarreal saw it. According to CompuBox, Curiel connected on only 27 more punches overall than Rocha (232-of-731 to 205-of-818).
“[It was] super competitive,” Rocha told DAZN’s Chris Mannix in the ring. “My hat’s off to Raul and his team. They did a good job. I felt like I, personally, coulda done more. I feel like I landed the harder shots. He was landing the more pitter-patter shots. I was never hurt in the rounds or anything like that. … But I thought I pulled it off, probably 7-5.”
Rocha (25-2-1, 16 KOs) – a southpaw from Santa Ana, California, who is ranked No. 8 among The Ring’s welterweight contenders – took a tactical approach to the first half of their bout because he was wary of Curiel’s power. Curiel (15-0-1, 13 KOs) – a Guadalajara, Mexico native who is trained by Freddie Roach – began landing flusher punches in the sixth round, including his right uppercut, and built momentum as Rocha was forced to fight more than box at the point the anticipated action began to take shape.
“I promised a war and we got a war for the people,” said Curiel, who is rated No. 10 by The Ring. “Man, it was a tremendous fight. I’m very happy with my job. Let’s do this again.”
Curiel caught Rocha with right uppercuts during the seventh round, when Rocha fired back with an array of punches in an attempt to keep the rugged Curiel honest.
Rocha dug to Curiel’s body during the eighth round. Curiel took those shots well, however, and knocked Rocha off balance with a right hand and then a left hook toward the end of the eighth round.
A slugfest erupted during the 10th round. Rocha rocked Curiel with multiple lefts during those three minutes, but Curiel came back with his fair share of rights in that round.
The 11th and 12 rounds were packed with action as well. Rocha got the better of Curiel at times in those championship rounds, yet he wasn’t strong enough to hurt the persistent pressure fighter.
Curiel couldn’t drop Rocha, either, no matter how many hard shots he landed. Russell scored eight of their 12 rounds for Rocha, who was knocked out three bouts earlier in the sixth round by underdog Giovani Santillan.
Rocha avoided another knockout defeat by circumventing an abundance of exchanges with the hard-hitting, right-handed Curiel, who fought for Mexico at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 27-year-old Rocha was the best opponent of Curiel’s seven-year pro career, but Curiel would need to beat Rocha in what would be a welcomed rematch if he is to advance as a welterweight contender.
