O'Shaquie Foster is the 130-pound champion top contender Ray Ford wants to fight the most.
Raymond Ford eventually wants to mix it up with all of the top names at 130 pounds.
But if the 26-year-old Ford had the option to choose his next fight, he would take on O’Shaquie Foster.
“That's the fight I really want,” Ford told The Ring. “I been asking for that fight for a while now. He didn’t move up to lightweight, so fighting me makes the most sense.”
Starting a run at 135 pounds was on the board for Foster. The 32-year-old Orange, Texas native was initially scheduled to defend his WBC super featherweight title against Stephen Fulton on December 6 at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas.
Although their fight did take place, Foster’s crown wasn’t on the line due to Fulton missing weight by two pounds.
In a bizarre move, however, the WBC elected to place its interim lightweight title on the line. Once Foster (24-3, 12 KOs) beat Fulton (23-2, 8 KOs) via a lopsided unanimous decision, he was given just a few weeks to choose which weight class he wanted to compete in.
After giving it some thought, Foster, who’s The Ring's No. 1 junior lightweight contender, decided to vacate his newly won interim title and hold on to his 130-pound WBC strap.
News of Foster’s decision made Ford (18-1-1, 8 KOs) a happy man.
The Camden, New Jersey native is coming off a fairly close points win against Abraham Nova on August 16 at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He is the WBC’s ranked third-rated contender for Foster’s title.
The former WBA 126-pound champion loathes Foster, but he didn’t downplay his performance in a fight he considered 50/50 heading in.
Nevertheless, no matter how good he looked against Fulton, The Ring’s No. 8 junior lightweight is confident in his ability to give Foster an unbelievable beating.
“He looked good,” Ford admitted. “I can’t take anything away from his performance, but I’m not Fulton. I’ll stop Foster or beat him up.”
