Raymond Muratalla has nothing but big fights on his mind. The 28-year-old doesn’t have the biggest voice. But part of his unwillingness to call his shot or name names was due to his position. In a few weeks, however, that could change.

The 28-year-old doesn’t have the biggest voice. But part of his unwillingness to call his shot or name names was due to his position. In a few weeks, however, that could change.
On May 10th, at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, Muratalla (22-0, 17 KOs) will take on Zaur Abdullaev for the interim IBF lightweight strap. The fight hasn’t taken place yet but Muratalla already walks around like a man who’s won.
Some may call it hubris but Muratalla believes it’s simply confidence. Regardless of the word choice, the California native is already looking ahead.
By and large, you won’t catch him talking about an innocuous title defense. You also won’t catch him engaging in talks with someone who doesn’t have something to bring to the table. Provided everything goes according to plan, Muratalla would have plenty of options. One name, nevertheless, protrudes to the top of his list.
“The one that makes the most sense is Keyshawn (Davis),” said Muratalla to Sean Zittel. “He’s with Top Rank and I’m with Top Rank.”
With Muratalla pontificating himself, Davis would likely say that the feeling is mutual. Over the years, the former Olympic silver medalist has consistently stated that Muratalla is on his radar. Grabbing an interim title would only entice him to follow through on that plan.
First things first, of course, Davis (13-0, 9 KOs) has to take care of business against Edwin De Los Santos on June 7th.
Slipping on an Abdullaev banana peel is something Muratalla can’t afford. So while he would love to keep the dialogue going pertaining to Davis, Shakur Stevenson, or anyone else at the top of the division, his main focus will remain on the opponent in front of him.
“I’m not looking past him. I know anything can happen in a fight. I’m gonna be 100% prepared. Whatever he comes with I’m ready for.”
