Junior lightweight prospect Reito Tsutsumi revelled in his Riyadh debut against a tough Leobardo Quintana and answered some pressing questions encouragingly en route to a fourth-round finish, as the 23-year-old seeks to make a world rankings splash in ...
Reito Tsutsumi didn't have it all his own way, but found a fourth-round finish to cap a successful 2025 campaign on his Saudi Arabia debut against the game Leobardo Quintana on The Ring V undercard headlined by Naoya Inoue-Alan Picasso.
Unlike his first three professional bouts, scattered across New York and Las Vegas on other marquee shows, the 23-year-old junior lightweight contender was matched tough with Mexicali's Quintana (12-2, 5 KOs) refusing to take a backward step in the show opener.
During his translated post-fight interview he acknowledged as much that his agemate's style wasn't what he expected, yet the Ismael Salas-trained prospect made subtle adjustments and relished their close-range exchanges before finishing with a flourish.
A beautifully-placed right hook 45 seconds into the fourth signalled the beginning of the end, he repeated the trick a few seconds later before unloading with a three-punch combo.
The referee began his standard eight count and although El Chino rose to his feet, he wasn't happy with what he saw and promptly waved it off midway through their eight-rounder.
Tsutsumi (4-0, 3 KOs) feinted plenty in the early going and was made to think carefully about his punch entries, being countered just as much by a tricky operator who gladly drained the Japanese southpaw with nice uppercuts and shot variation.
Sporting a bloodied nose in the second, Tsutsumi needed to pass this acid test and the CompuBox punch stats spoke for themselves: 276 power shots thrown between the pair in less than four completed rounds, Reito more accurate to head and body.
Although tagged more often than he can afford against better, harder-hitting operators at the next level, there was plenty to be encouraged by as the former amateur standout looks to make a rankings splash in 2026.
Garcia upsets Imanaga
In the subsequent contest over 10 rounds, there was a split decision upset as short-notice foe Eridson Garcia (23-1, 14 KOs) dropped and edged past Taiga Imanaga (9-1, 5 KOs).
Although it was a cagey start, Imanaga was conceivably ahead and holding a wide lead on the scorecards through six rounds, predicated behind his jab.
Two rounds later, it could've been all over for the 26-year-old after absorbing hellacious punishment in the eighth frame, where he was floored by a right hook and in survival mode.
Somehow able to recover enough, his resistance remained but the tempo slowed as Texas-based Garcia unloaded combination punching and pressed the issue, wearily, putting the finishing touches to a dominant second-half during a fight no-one was expecting.
Ultimately the knockdown proved pivotal, with 96-93 and 95-94 scorecards in his favour, split by a 95-94 in the Japanese southpaw's favour. Afterwards, the Dominican southpaw was appreciative after succeeding in a short-notice assignment while speaking of a willingness to box between 130 and 135-pounds, depending on forthcoming fight offers.
