There was nothing controversial about Armando Resendiz’s upset win over Caleb Plant.
But since that split-decision victory was the turning point in Resendiz’s career, he feels indebted to Plant for it and doesn’t have a problem granting Plant a rematch.
“Of course I would take it,” Resendiz told several reporters when asked if he would fight Plant again. “He gave me the opportunity. So now, it would be a chance to pay it forward and give him the opportunity to fight me.”
Resendiz, who beat Plant in May 2025 to win the WBA interim super middleweight title, was eventually elevated to full champion after Terence Crawford, who was the division’s undisputed champion, announced his retirement six months later.
Resendiz didn’t hold onto that belt for long. The 27-year-old native of Guayabitos, Nayarit, Mexico, was dominated by Jaime Munguia on May 2 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
He’ll look to get back in the win column Saturday night, when he takes on Australian underdog Koen Mazoudier (16-4-1, 6 KOs) in a 10-round, 168-pound bout at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Resendiz replaced Jermall Charlo last week after Mazoudier’s original opponent suffered an undisclosed injury in training camp.
DAZN will stream the Resendiz-Mazoudier match internationally as part of the Sebastian Fundora-Ermal Hadribeaj undercard. TNT and truTV will televise the main portion of the event in the United States (8 p.m. ET; 5 p.m. PT).
While Resendiz (16-3, 11 KOs) will fight for the second time in five months, Plant (23-3, 14 KOs) continues to sit on the sidelines.
The former IBF super middleweight champion from Ashland City, Tennessee, hasn’t fought since that defeat to Resendiz. His hiatus isn’t likely to end any time soon, either, as he is still without a head trainer after splitting with Stephen “Breadman” Edwards.
If Plant returns and decides that he wants revenge, Resendiz is all for it. However, he isn’t focused on a rematch with Plant.
What he wants more than anything is to regain what he recently lost.
“I have this opportunity that I plan to take advantage of to the fullest,” Resendiz said. “If I win on Saturday night, what I would like to do is become world champion.”
