Junior welterweight titleholder Richardson Hitchins calls out junior lightweight champ Lamont Roach on social media.
When one door closes, another one opens.
Richardson Hitchins, the IBF junior welterweight titleholder, grew tired of waiting for a showdown with WBO beltholder Teofimo Lopez to materialize and moved on. And he knows a potential opponent in a similar situation, Lamont Roach, who expected to face lightweight star Gervonta Davis in a rematch after their draw on March 1 only to watch as Davis made a deal to face Jake Paul on Nov. 14 instead.
Why not Hitchins vs. Roach?
“Ain’t no big fights out there for you,” Hitchins said on his X account, directing his post at Roach. “And cause the fights we wanted fell through, I respect you as a fighter and believe you deserve another big fight. Let's run it for my 140 title.”
Hitchins (20-0, 8 KOs) desperately wants to build off his momentum following his sensational eighth-round knockout of George Kambosos in June at Madison Square Garden. Once Kambosos hit the canvas and he couldn’t get up, Hitchins' popularity soared. Now the 27-year-old New Yorker is looking to parlay that into another big-time matchup.
So far, several fighters, including Shakur Stevenson, have raised their hands. However, he obviously is intrigued with Hitchins, who also wants to build off a good performance.
The 30-year-old from Maryland stunned the boxing world against one of the sport’s biggest stars, fighting Davis on at least even terms in their majority-decision draw at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Of course, Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs) would give up a size advantage against Hitchins, but lately, that’s been his modus operandi.
The 30-year-old from Maryland still holds the WBA 130-pound title, but he didn’t hesitate to move up to 135 to face Davis. He also stated repeatedly that he was open to fighting champions at 140 pounds, although he hasn’t mentioned Hitchins specifically.
