Flat-out, Richardson Hitchins can’t stand George Kambosos but that won’t stop him from being his biggest cheerleader this weekend.
Jake Wyllie has the sort of story that Hitchins can appreciate. He’s an unknown underdog but this Saturday night, he’s hoping that his name will reverberate throughout the sports world when he takes on Kambosos on short notice. The event will be broadcast globally by DAZN.
Beating the former unified champ would be life-changing for Wyllie but it would be career-altering for Hitchins.
Hitchins (19-0, 7 KOs) is proud to hold the IBF’s 140-pound title but to legitimize himself, he knows that beating the likes of Kambosos would take him a long way.
In essence, there’s a ton on the line for Hitchins, more than just validity and a nice paycheck. But even if Kambosos flops, Hitchins has a backup plan…kinda.
“If George Kambosos can’t get the W, we’re gonna make sure it’s a fight that the fans deserve,” said Hitchins during an interview with FightHype.com.
For the better part of the last three years, Kambosos (21-3, 10 KOs) has looked shaky. With just one controversial win across three lopsided losses, the popular Aussie has seen better days.
His recent string of bad outings and bad luck aside, Hitchins desperately wants to get his hands on Kambosos. Most of it is due to his upset win over Teofimo Lopez in 2021. Hitchins wants a win over Kambosos. Actually, he needs it. But he won’t pigeonhole himself to just one name. Should Kambosos lose, his name will be off the table but Hitchins doesn’t want to speak hypothetically. Although losing is a possibility, Hitchins is quietly keeping his fingers crossed.
“I’m not gonna come back and defend my title against a bum,” continued Hitchins. “But I pray Kambosos gets the win.”
