Devin Haney has seemingly turned on the nearest faucet he can find and has washed his hands of the junior welterweight division. But while he’s seemingly off to bigger and better things, Richardson Hitchins doesn’t believe him one bit.

“He can still make 140,” said Hitchins on Tha Boxing Voice recently. “He’s not ready to go to 147 yet.”

Although he appears to have the frame to move up, Haney hopes he'll ease into his new weight class facing Jose Ramirez Friday night at Fatal Fury on DAZN. The former unified 140-pound champ is still thirsty, but Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) opted for a catchweight of 144.

Everything is calculated. Although Haney, 26, due to a failed post-fight drug test, he took a year off to get his mind and body right.

Hitchins, who recently flirted with moving up if he isn’t given a chance to unify at 140, doesn't like the way Haney has gone about it. The bombastic trash-talker, who holds the IBF belt, has always wanted to get his hands on Haney and has no problem following him to a new weight class if that’s what it will take.

In terms of Haney's skills, Hitchins isn’t naive. He knows that downplaying his talents would come across as disingenuous. If Haney really wants to compete as a full-fledged welter, however, he just needs to make the move.

“Catchweight? Why you just didn’t fight at 147? What’s 144? Come on," Hitchins said. "Why is he fighting at 144? Is that a weight class? He’s not ready, obviously.”
