The win was sweet, but Hitchins won't have any time to enjoy it. Once Kambosos crawled out of the ring and a microphone was thrown in the 27-year-old's face, he aggressively called out .
NEW YORK — George Kambosos puffed out his chest and began naming his accomplishments. From the major world titles to the smaller trinkets, his trophy case has them all. Yet, Richardson Hitchins looked at his nails apathetically and rolled his eyes.
Hitchins couldn't find the relevance. This past Saturday night, he went out and proved that Kambosos' past accolades had nothing to do with the here and now.
Hitchins (20-0, 8 KOs) may have danced during his ring walk, but he stood right in front of him. Time and time again, the normally durable Aussie missed and Hitchins made him pay.
In the eighth, things got ugly. Hitchins tagged him with a body shot, forcing him to kneel. Getting back to his feet showed braver, but it was pointless as Hitchins finished him just seconds later.
The win was sweet, but Hitchins won't have any time to enjoy it. Once Kambosos crawled out of the ring and a microphone was thrown in the 27-year-old's face, he aggressively called out Devin Haney.
A matchup with the former two-division champ isn't the only one he wants, but it's certainly near the top of his list.
"Right now, I got a lot of opportunities," Hitchins told several reporters. "Hopefully he'll give me the opportunity. I think that fight, the people wanna see."
Haney (32-0, 15 KOs) is used to the callouts. Most fighters either in or around his weight class have targeted him. He no longer gets upset though, simply smiling before rolling with the punches.
Hitchins looked good at the Theater in Madison Square Garden, but he doesn't call the shots in that prospective matchup. Haney would.
There's zero indication that Haney will head back down to 140 pounds to fight Hitchins for his IBF title. But, if he were willing to move up, Haney would entertain it.
The next few weeks will be crucial. Not just for his next opponent but also for his public image. For years, Hitchins played in the background. The shadows being cast by his peers made it too dark for anyone to notice him. But even when he wasn't seen, he did his best to let everyone know that he was coming.
His voice though, was too meek. Now however, with some hardware wrapped around his waist and some newfound fame, he believes everyone is starting to see he was always the real deal.
"If you wanna see superb boxing, you gotta put me in that conversation with the Devin Haneys, Ryan Garcia, Teofimo. I been telling y'all for the longest."
