After George Kambosos Jr. held his end of the bargain by beating Jake Wyllie in Australia on March 22, it appears all systems go for another title shot for the “Ferocious” one.
After George Kambosos Jr. held his end of the bargain by beating Jake Wyllie in Australia on March 22, it appears all systems go for another title shot for the “Ferocious” one.
Matchroom Boxing head Eddie Hearn confirmed that Kambosos is likely headed toward a challenge against IBF junior welterweight champion Richardson Hitchins on June 21 at a yet-to-be-announced venue in New York.
“The date is going to be June 21. That’s what we’re targeting. There’s no movement on that date,” Hearn told The Ring following Kambosos’ unanimous decision win in Sydney, Australia.
“Richardson Hitchins is fighting on that date, [versus] George Kambosos or someone else. I don’t think [Kambosos’] cut is that bad. It’s going to take four or five weeks for the cut to heal. But he’ll be fit and then he can start sparring again. He needs to make that date, and I believe he can.
"It's a great fight. George is all action. He's captured all of the belts at 135. He and Hitchins have been going at it on social media. The build-up will be epic. I think it's a great fight.
Hitchins took to social media on Sunday to further fan the promotional flame.
“First title defense and homecoming against Kambozo. I’m not coming to play. NYC will be a f--king movie that night. Let’s go!” said Hitchins.
Hitchins (19-0, 7 KOs) last fought in December and scored a unanimous decision win against Liam Paro to win the crown he now carries.
Kambosos (22-3, 10 KOs) is 2-3 in his last five since shocking Teofimo Lopez Jr. in 2021. He lost twice to Devin Haney by unanimous decision in 2022, and before the Wyllie win, Vasiliy Lomachenko knocked him out last May for the IBF lightweight title.
