Ring Magazine champion Lauren Price will make her BBC debut on April 4 against undefeated Puerto Rican Stephanie Pineiro Aquino in Cardiff.
The 31-year-old, who also holds the WBA, WBC and IBF welterweight titles, will put all her hardware on the line against Aquino (10-0, 3 KOs), The Ring’s No. 3 contender, in what will be her second headline event at the Welsh capital’s Utilita Arena.
Price (9-0, 2 KOs), an Olympic champion, has not boxed since she widely outpointed Natasha Jonas at Royal Albert Hall in March, and talks are ongoing to secure a unification clash with WBO champion Mikaela Mayer.
With that fight against the American not yet secured, however, Boxxer has decided to arrange this defense against a fellow southpaw, who is nicknamed “The Medicine.”
Price will become the first Welsh woman to headline on BBC with the event set to be broadcast live and free-to-air on BBC Two.
“Defending my world titles at home in Wales means everything to me,” she said. “I want to repay the support everyone has shown me with another great performance.
“I never turn down a challenge. Stephanie Pineiro Aquino is a dangerous fighter, but nothing is going to stop me from getting my hand raised on April 4 in Cardiff.”
Promoter Ben Shalom added: “Lauren Price is not just a world champion, she is a Welsh sporting icon and one of the greatest athletes the country has ever produced.
“To bring a huge world title defense home to Cardiff for her, live on BBC Two, is something we’re incredibly proud of. This is a serious test against a top-class opponent but these are exactly the nights Lauren thrives on. April 4 will be another massive moment for her.”
