Former light heavyweight world title challenger Marcus Browne has stepped in to fight Brandon Glanton in Lagos on October 1 following Rocky Fielding's withdrawal.

Glanton and Fielding had been scheduled to meet in the main event of the Amir Khan-promoted show in the Nigerian capital later this year.

Fielding (30-3, 18 KOs) was set to fight for the first time since he was stopped by Dan Azeez in December 2022 but it has been confirmed the 38-year-old from Liverpool has withdrawn.

That news has opened the door for Staten Island-born Browne (25-2, 16 KOs) to face compatriot Glanton on just five weeks’ notice.

The 34-year-old has fought only four times in the last six years, with a 2-2 record. He beat Denis Grachev and Adrian Taylor on points over 10 rounds but also suffered damaging stoppage defeats to Jean Pascal and former undisputed champion Artur Beterbiev.

His loss to the big-punching Russian, which took place on December 17, 2021, was his first attempt at a world title and also his final fight at 175 pounds.

He moved up to cruiserweight to face Taylor the following August but has not boxed since, while a proposed June 28 return against Olanrewaju Durodola was cancelled on fight day due to unspecified medical concerns.

Now he will get his chance to further establish himself in the division against Glanton (20-3, 17 KOs), who is coming off the back of a 12-round decision defeat by Chris Billam-Smith at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in April.

Browne said: “It’s been a long time coming. Glanton just wrote himself a check his ass won’t be able to cash!”

Glanton added: “This fight has been in the making for a long time now. It’s not only a fight that was supposed to happen, but that needs to happen. Not just for boxing but for the two of us to finally settle things. Marcus Browne is legitimately a bad human being. On October 1 there will be a reckoning.”

The event will take place at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos State, Nigeria and will also feature Andrew Tabiti in the chief support while Ghana’s former IBF lightweight champion Richard Commey will face undefeated Londoner Shiloh Defreitas on the undercard.
