The next hometown headliner for Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez could double as a final title run.

The Ring has confirmed that plans are being explored for the legendary former four-division champion to challenge WBO junior bantamweight titlist Phumelela Cafu. Such a fight would take place in Gonzalez’s hometown of Managua, Nicaragua.

Messages left for Teiken Promotions and manager Carlos Blandon were not returned as this goes to publication.

Gonzalez (52-4, 42 knockouts) would fight for the second straight time at home if his team is successful with this targeted mission. He ended a 19-month hiatus with a tenth-round knockout of Rober Barrera on July 12. The fight was his first in Managua since 2015, when he won a non-title fight in between Ring/WBC flyweight championship defenses.

It was also Gonzalez’s first fight since a narrow defeat to then-Ring 115-pound king Juan Francisco Estrada (44-4, 28 KOs) in their memorable Dec. 2022 rubber match in Glendale, Arizona. Gonzalez previously defeated Estrada in 2012 and lost a controversial split decision in 2021. He sought to launch a third junior bantamweight title reign and sixth overall with their trilogy clash.

That dream is still in place, despite earlier thoughts of campaigning at bantamweight.

Gonzalez weighed just under 117 pounds for his win over Barrera in July. There were loose talks of his potentially facing fellow former four-division champ Nonito Donaire (42-8, 28 KOs) for a secondary WBA bantamweight title. However, those plans seemed to have faded as Gonzalez and his team prefer to challenge for a full title.

Cafu (11-0-3, 8 KOs) is The Ring No. 4 junior bantamweight. The 26-year-old South African southpaw earned that place after an Oct. 14 split decision win over Kosei Tanaka (20-2, 11 KOs; No. 5 at 115 by The Ring) in Tokyo. It was his first fight outside of South Africa, with another passport stamp on the way should he land a dream title defense versus Gonzalez, a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer.

Gonzalez has won titles at strawweight, junior flyweight, flyweight and two separate reigns at junior bantamweight. His entire flyweight run came as The Ring champion, beginning with a Sept. 2014 ninth-round knockout of Akira Yaegashi. Overall, Gonzalez is 18-4 (12 KOs) in major title fights.
