A night of boxing will serve a greater purpose Friday when Hall-of-Fame fighter Roy Jones Jr. hosts a charitable card dedicated to rescuing abducted children and dismantling trafficking networks.
The event, which will take place at Yakama Legends Casino in Toppenish, Washington, will be headlined by a middleweight rematch between multiple-time title challenger and local favorite Maricela Cornejo and Natash Spence. Cornejo (19-8, 7 KOs) will try to avenge a unanimous-decision loss to Spence (10-8-2, 6 KOs) last summer.
Backed by Jones’ charity, “RJJ Saving the Kids,” proceeds from the $35 pay-per-view event, which can be purchased on 1ezlife.com, will benefit non-profit organizations that are leading the effort to stop child trafficking.
For Jones, the cause transcends sports, as he turns the boxing ring into a platform for hope, prevention and action.
“Back in my days, the big issue was drugs and catching drug dealers to get them off the streets,” Jones told The Ring. “Now we have something even worse because child abduction is completely different. Innocent kids with the purest of hearts don’t choose to be abducted, and they can’t defend and look out for themselves. Nobody wants to see a child get abducted, and it needs to be stopped.”
Nearly 30,000 children were reported missing in 2024, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, a trusted FBI partner.
“Thank God I haven’t been hit close to home with this, but it’s close to home for me because I love kids, I love teaching kids boxing, and I love the people,” Jones continued. “Children need to be protected. Even as a kid, I would fight the bully hurting other kids. That’s who I am. That’s how I work. I am willing and ready to give my life to those who can’t defend themselves.”
As for the rest of the boxing card, the event will also feature former Colorado State University defensive tackle turned heavyweight upstart Darnell Thompson, who seeks a third straight stoppage to kick off his pro career against Ryan Bailey.
The 32-year-old Thompson, of Raleigh, North Carolina, is trained by Jones.
