Ryan Garcia has now doubled down on his quest to prove that he’s a clean fighter.
The Ring has confirmed that Garcia has committed to random drug testing contracted through Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) ahead of his May fight with Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero. The move came after he previously questioned the credibility of the industry’s most reputable testing agency but has since agreed to re-enroll in its program.
Additionally, Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs; 1 No-Contest) will also submit to random testing as conducted by agent contracted through the California State Athletic Commission.
Garcia tested positive for the banned substance Ostarine surrounding his April 20 clash with Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs; 1 NC). The test results—discovered through VADA testing and later verified in a separate test through the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC)—nullified a majority decision win claimed by Garcia at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
The victory was changed to a No-Contest, and Garcia was later issued a backdated but minimum one-year suspension as well as forfeiture of his listed $1,200,000 fight purse. Garcia insisted that a contaminated supplement was the cause of the positive tests and also questioned the validity of the VADA tests—hence the extra step taken by the Victorville, California-bred boxer to have California testing as a secondary source.
“Ryan signed up for both VADA and the California Commission Testing Program,” Lupe Valencia, Garcia’s manager and attorney, informed The Ring. “To be clear, Ryan has been testing for many years and has always tested clean.
“He was the victim of contamination. That contamination provided zero benefit. That's what the experts have told us. If there was evidence to the contrary, you certainly would have heard about it.”
The length of Garcia’s enrollment with both agencies is not immediately known as this goes to publication.
With Garcia’s decision, all four welterweights on the May Ring Magazine USA show are now enrolled in VADA testing—a staple of Riyadh Season-affiliated shows.
The Ring confirmed that Romero (16-2, 13 KOs) enrolled almost immediately after Turki Alalshikh, head of Riyadh Season and the new owner of this publication, announced the May show.
Haney is already enrolled in year-round testing through VADA, the only active boxer to submit to such stringent testing. The former two-division champ will face Jose Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs), who has once again submitted to VADA testing as is the case with most fighters trained by Robert Garcia.
The concept behind the May show is that Garcia and Haney—with wins in their respective bouts—will then meet in a rematch later this year at the start of Riyadh Season in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Garcia’s participation on this event will obviously require his suspension to be lifted by the New York commission. Terms of his agreement at the time were to provide NYSAC with clean testing samples during the suspension period in order for his ban to be lifted at the one-year mark.
The dual testing enrollment should help his case, though he would have to request for those results to be reported to the New York governing body.
“We will report them if they want them,” Andy Foster, CSAC executive director, informed The Ring. “Our testing should in no way cause any issues for VADA. We have 100% full confidence in Dr. Margaret Goodman and utilize VADA services often.
“We are simply providing some additional testing as Ryan's home Commission.”
The decision to have both testing services in place was a no-brainer for Garcia and his team, though also a requirement for Riyadh Season participation.
“Ryan was always planning to continue testing, as all fighters at the elite level do,” Valencia clarified. “We entered into a deal to fight for a world title versus Romero and then a rematch against Haney.
“Ryan and our whole team are excited to partner with His Excellency on a very special journey.”
