LAS VEGAS — For much of the build-up to his fight against Mario Barrios, Ryan Garcia was steadfast on facing Shakur Stevenson next.
After a dominant unanimous decision win over Mario Barrios, a meeting with Stevenson is among many intriguing possibilities for the new WBC welterweight titleholder. If that fight happens, Garcia believes he’d be the toughest test of Stevenson’s career.
“Shakur knows that he can't get lazy with me at all,” Garcia said during the post-fight press conference. “He was looking at me right now and goes, ‘You're not even big.’ I'm like, ‘Bro, you were scared if I was big? That's crazy. That's what you were scared of?’ I got a little glimpse of what he was worried about. But size doesn’t win fights at all. You saw that today. Mario was bigger than me, but I was quicker."
Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs, 1 NC) defeated Barrios to become a world champion for the first time Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in the main event of “The Ring: High Stakes."
The 27-year-old from Victorville, California, came out the gates firing and dropped Barrios (29-3-2, 18 KOs) with an overhand right just over 20 seconds into the fight. That knockdown set the tone, as Garcia’s speed overwhelmed Barrios and turned the fight into one-way traffic.
Garcia won handily on all three scorecards. Judge David Sutherland gave him a 120-107 shutout, while Tim Cheatham and Steve Weisfeld had it 119-108 and 118-109, respectively. Garcia outlanded Barrios 185 to 106 in total punches and 103 to 43 in power shots, according to CompuBox.
With the win, he has no shortage of options. And in light of his strong performance, it might not be wise to dismiss this version of Garcia’s chances against anyone, including Stevenson (25-0, 11 KOs).
“I want that fight [against Stevenson],” Garcia said. “I feel like I’m always up for a challenge. There’s always a way to win.”
