Ryan Garcia has given a clue as to who he’s fighting next, while taking shots at some of the sport’s other top stars.
Garcia joined the Creators Think Podcast and said he’s about to face Teofimo Lopez and took his fair share of swings at the recently retired Terence Crawford, as well as Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis.
“I’m out here fighting Devin Haney, Tank Davis, now I’m about to fight Teofimo Lopez. I’m fighting everybody that’s in front of me, but [Davis] hasn't done nothing,” said Garcia.
“I would love to [fight Davis again]. I think he needs to clean up some of his act and get back into the sport. We all want to see him back, including myself so I can run it back with him. But I don't think we are going to fight for a long time. He won't go up to 147, either. A lot of these guys want me to take the risk and go lower all the time, but they won't do it. Sounds a little p**** to me. Now that I am a world champion, you're going to have to come to me now. If you don't want to, I don't really need you anyways.”
Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs) was crowned as the WBC welterweight champion last month after dropping and dominating Mario Barrios for a unanimous decision.
“With Tank, before he thought that people really needed him. But now with Turki Alalshikh, Netflix and all of these other big players, there is really no such thing as an A-side. Now you don't have an excuse to fight people. But he still won't fight people, which nobody really calls him out on. Other than myself, who has he fought?”
Garcia faced Davis three years ago at a 136-pound catchweight bout with a rehydration clause and was knocked out in seven rounds.
Garcia, a 27-year-old Southern California native, is again dealing with the sticky subject surrounding a rehydration clause when it comes to discussing a clash against Stevenson. The Ring and WBO junior welterweight champion said he would make “easy work” out of Garcia.
Garcia previously said he'd be willing to face Stevenson at a 144-pound catchweight but has since changed his tune on meeting Stevenson in the middle.
“[Stevenson is scared to fight me at 147 pounds]. If he goes up to 147, he wants me to be on a rehydration clause where I can’t go up [past] 157 … It wouldn't be a hard fight. It would be a thinking fight. You can think all you want. When punches are coming at you too quickly, your brain can't react ... Yes, [I knock out] Shakur. That's the way to do it.”
Crawford, who is Stevenson’s career-long confidant, previously predicted that Stevenson “wipes the floor” with Garcia.
Garcia took exception to Crawford’s comments and took the moment to bash his career credentials as well.
“I think that Terence never fought any young and hungry talented fighters,” said Garcia. “If you look at his resume, he fought an already older Errol Spence and Canelo Alvarez. Name one guy he fought who was a young lion? You can't name them because he hasn't done it. He didn't fight Jaron Ennis, Vergil Ortiz, he hasn't fought me. He just doesn't fight anyone who is hungry, who has the same hunger he had ... I don't care if he comes out of retirement or not. I'm just calling it how I see it.”
