Sam Goodman is disappointed that he didn't leave Saudi Arabia with Nick Ball's world title belt but makes it clear that he won't give up on his dreams.
Sam Goodman took a significant risk in hopes of becoming a world champion.
The 26-year-old Aussie had expected to challenge 122-pound champion Naoya Inoue in January but that didn't happen because of a recurring eye injury. Then, instead of waiting for another opportunity at his weight, Goodman made a bold move.
He moved up a division to face WBA 126-pound champ Nick Ball on the Moses Itauma-Dillian Whyte card this past weekend in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Goodman (20-1, 8 KOs) fought like a man possessed at ANB Arena but came up short in a battle of unbeaten fighters. The scores were 118-110, 117-111 and 115-113, all in favor of the titleholder from England.
Of course, Goodman was despondent after losing his first major title shot. However, he has no interest in wallowing in his disappointment. His plan is to get back to the gym and continue to pursue his dreams.
“Stood tall in the deep end,” Goodman wrote on his Instagram account. “Wasn’t what I came here for, but we keep moving forward, regroup, and get better, nothing changes. Thanks to everyone who came over to support and showed love back home. I felt it all.”
Ball (23-0-1, 13 KOs) took a simple approach against Goodman. He placed his hands up high, plowed forward, and threw combinations relentlessly. That high work rate proved too much for the challenger.
Goodman made it clear that he's as determined as ever in spite of the loss.
“We will be back," he said, "and I will be world champion.”
