Sam Noakes believes his matchup with Abdullah Mason on Nov. 22 will be his coming out party. The pair will clash for the WBO lightweight title on "The Ring IV: Night of the Champions" in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Sam Noakes isn’t the most recognizable face in the boxing world, even among his peers.
The 28-year-old lightweight contender from England didn’t gain worldwide attention until it was announced that he would be taking on Abdullah Mason on the David Benavidez-Anthony Yarde card November 22 at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
And the oddsmakers have Noakes (17-0, 15 KOs) as a significant underdog against the highly skilled Mason.
Does all that bother him? Not a bit. He's confident that his performance against Mason will leave no doubt that he deserves to be on the world stage.
“I’m just looking forward to being in there,” Noakes told The Ring. “I’m excited, and I think I belong there.”
Mason (19-0, 17 KOs) has looked like a star during his brief career. The 21-year-old from Ohio has made it look relatively easy. This year alone he has stopped all three of his opponents, including the capable Jeremia Nakathila this past June.
Noakes is a realist. He isn’t surprised that most are pointing at a resume filled with obscure opponents and counting him out.
The problem with that approach, in his opinion? His critics probably haven't followed his career closely, meaning they don't know what he can do in the ring.
They'll find out on November 22.
