LONDON – Ellie Scotney became the youngest undisputed champion in British boxing history at London’s Olympia on Easter Sunday.
The reigning Ring, WBO, IBF and WBC champion stylishly dispatched WBA champion Mayelli Flores to complete the full set in only her 12th professional outing.
This was a star-making performance by 28-year-old Scotney, who was forced to work for every minute of the fight by the all-action Mexican. But the Catford favorite maintained her composure and produced arguably the finest all-round showing of her career to date.
Judges Glen Dawson and Sven Graefe certainly agreed, making her a shutout, 100-90 winner, but Victor Loughlin had it inexplicably closer at 96-94. Regardless, Scotney was a rightful unanimous decision winner and now the owner of all the marbles at 122 pounds.
The victory also fulfilled a promise she had made to her late nan Eileen when she was still alive that she would complete the set. Now, a little over three years after her nan’s passing, Scotney made good on her word.
“She was non-stop from the first bell,” Scotney said of Flores. “She was a real champion, and that was my hardest test. I gave everything tonight.”
Flores, decked out in the red, white and green of Mexico, marched out and immediately attempted to land with a big overhand right, but Scotney was smart to it.
That set the tone for a frenetic first round, during which Scotney boxed beautifully on the back foot as Flores stomped forward, ducking and weaving on her way.
But Scotney had no trouble timing her opponent with the right hand on the way in before gliding back out of range. It was more of the same in a high-paced second round, which Scotney had the better of.
Flores was still getting tagged on her way in during the third, but it did little to slow her down as she applied almost constant pressure through the round. That did not stop in the fourth either, but Scotney was now landing left hooks and straight rights over the top of Flores’ attacks.
The pace of the Mexican champion appeared to slow in the fifth, allowing Scotney to land even more consistently as the fight reached the halfway mark. The fight then exploded into life in the sixth as both women stood in center-ring and traded, much to the delight of the crowd.
It was more of the same in the seventh, and Scotney, without a stoppage as a professional, seemed to wobble Flores twice with right hands. She appeared to hurt her again in the eighth, but Flores smiled at her and stalked forward once again.
But it was Scotney who was smiling once the scores were announced, with that promise to Eileen well and truly completed.
The victory will also secure her a brand new car, after promoter Jake Paul promised to buy her one should she beat Flores.
Scotney currently can’t drive and gets two trains, a tube and a bus to Shane McGuigan’s east London gym in order to train. But now that she is undisputed, Scotney is planning on finally taking driving lessons.
“Jake,” she said, "make sure it’s a G-Wagon.”
