After one bad night at the pugilistic office, Sergio Mora believes Jared Anderson’s once bright future might be a thing of the past.
Tabbed as a can’t-miss prospect with loads of talent, Mora stood in disbelief as Anderson was picked apart and brutally stopped by The Ring’s No. 6 ranked heavyweight Martin Bakole, late last year. Now, the 25-year-old's rebuild begins.
Officially, Anderson (17-1, 15 KOs) will return on February 14th against Marios Kollias (12-3-1, 10 KOs). For the most part, Mora expects Anderson to look spectacular come fight night. But in terms of the championship dreams Anderson once had, Mora believes that’s a thing of the past.
“He has all of the skills to compete with the heavyweights,”
. “I just don’t think he has the size. You need size, especially in this era of heavyweights. He has the skills but he doesn’t have the size so no, I don’t think he becomes a heavyweight champion.”
Size matters in the heavyweight division but as of late, not so much. Oleksandr Usyk, who comes in around the same height and weight as Anderson, currently rules the division. Instead of overpowering his opponents, Usyk uses bemusing angles, wits, and a nonstop engine.
With practically all of the heavyweight hardware wrapped around his waist, Usyk has continued to enjoy success. Mora doesn’t view Anderson as the same type of talent.
Against Bakole, Anderson attempted to bully his man. Once that didn’t work, he attempted to box from the outside. That didn’t work either. Taking an L was never in Anderson’s game plan. He envisioned a rather short career but one that resulted in an undefeated record, a boatload of money, and a number of world titles.
Financially, Anderson will be fine but in terms of everything else, Mora doesn’t believe he’ll get back to where he once was.
“No, I don’t think Anderson can come back.”
