Sebastian Fundora isn’t an easy person to get ready for, but Serhii Bohachuk just got the perfect preparation.

At the Commerce (Calif.) Casino late Saturday night, Mykal Fox fought a good fight, but ultimately Bohachuk did just enough to win a unanimous decision. Two judges scored it 97-93, while the final judge sitting ringside scored it 98-92.

Fox, no matter the weight class he elects to fight in, is normally one of the taller contenders. Saturday, he did his best to use that to his advantage.

In the opening round, Bohachuk disregarded Fox’s height (plus-3 at 6-foot-3) and reach advantage (plus-8 at 81 inches) and stepped right to him. Being pressed from the very first second threw off the lanky contender. He fought frantically in those first three minutes, leading to an early deficit on the scorecards.

Bohachuk kept applying pressure in the second. He attacked Fox’s body and forced him to fight on the inside, which appeared to make him uncomfortable.

It was much of the same in the third. Bohachuk mixed it up beautifully. Fox, subsequently, appeared as though he would crumble under pressure. However, after receiving stern instruction from his corner, he re-emerged.

It was all about boxing once the fourth and fifth rounds came. Fox used a long jab to push Bohachuk. There wasn’t much steam on his punches, though, which allowed Bohachuk to walk back into the line of fire.

In the first few rounds, Fox (24-5, 5 KOs) simply stepped back and allowed Bohachuk to smother him. This time around, he turned him and angled off.

It took a while for the 30-year-old to figure out the bemusing and complex puzzle Fox laid in front of him, but in the second half of the fight he had it all under control.

In the seventh, in particular, Bohachuk (26-2, 24 KOs) began showing out as the action started in a familiar pattern. Fox attempted to jab his man and get him off balance with angles. Once Fox angled in one direction, however, Bohachuk would begin to do the same. That adjustment, along with more shots downstairs, ultimately slowed down Fox.

The final frame saw a more aggressive Fox emerge from his corner, but Bohachuk welcomed his offense with some of his own.

Although they fought to the final bell, it was Bohachuk who walked out of the arena with the victory. Now, he’s hoping that beating someone as lanky, tall and tricky as Fox will lead to a future fight and victory over Fundora, the WBC 154-pound champ.
