Amanda Serrano’s illustrious career will come to an end on her home island.
The seven-division champion from Carolina, Puerto Rico, will have her final fight against Skye Falzon at Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan on January 9. The fight is scheduled for 12 three-minute rounds for Serrano’s WBA, WBO and Ring featherweight titles and will headline a Most Valuable Promotions card on DAZN.
“It means everything,” Serrano said at the kickoff press conference Tuesday at Distrito T-Mobile in San Juan, Puerto Rico. “I always knew that my last fight would be here in Puerto Rico. You guys [have] been with me from the very beginning, supporting me, loving me, and I’ve been fighting for you guys. I bring my flag with me – it’s in my heart, and I’m always with you. I fight for you, and I just want you guys to celebrate my long journey. It’s gonna be a great night [on] January 9.”
Serrano (50-4-1, 32 KOs) withstood a far tougher test than most anticipated in her last fight, a majority-decision victory over Argentina’s Lucrecia Manzur on August 21.
In the aftermath, the 38-year-old southpaw hinted that the end is near given the difficulty she had against Manzur (14-5, 7 KOs). She reiterated that she feels the time has come for her to hang up the gloves when asked why she is retiring now.
If Serrano scores a knockout victory over Falzon (12-2, 7 KOs), she’d secure the record for knockouts by a female boxer, which she shares with pioneer Christy Martin (49-7-3, 32 KOs). While she said she isn’t focused on breaking the record, potentially accomplishing the feat in Puerto Rico would make it that much more meaningful.
“It will be the cherry on top if we get the knockout, but I don’t want to concentrate on that,” Serrano said. “If I train hard and I [do] everything I have to do, I know it will come.”
Falzon, of Batemans Bay, New South Wales, Australia, went 1-2 in her first three fights. She has since rattled off 11 straight wins.
The 38-year-old Falzon is coming off a unanimous-decision victory over Monika Singh on September 11. She had won five straight bouts by knockout before going the distance against Singh.
Falzon didn’t believe she’d ever face Serrano and said she cried when she was offered the fight. However, those emotions won’t interfere with her pursuit of ruining Serrano’s swan song.
“When I do win on January 9th, it will be game-changing for me,” Falzon said. “Everything I’ve worked for, it’s just a dream. If you can’t dream it, then you can’t achieve it. I’m not here just to take part in Amanda’s history. I’m here to try to write my own, and I wouldn’t be a fighter if I didn’t believe I could win.”
