Shakan Pitters is out of Friday night's European light heavyweight title fight with Daniel Blenda Dos Santos after being admitted to hospital on Monday
The fight had been scheduled to top GBM Sports’ ‘One Night In The Capital’ card which DAZN will be streaming live from London’s York Hall.
On Tuesday afternoon, GBM’s Izzy Asif took to Instagram to provide an update on Pitters’ condition.
“I’ve been up all night trying to sort this out with my team, trying to get a fight over the line so the top of the bill continues,” Asif said. “We’re nearly there. This is no April Fool. This is boxing promotion. Most importantly, Shakan is alright. He’s still in hospital but it’s nothing serious, nothing critical and the show goes on."
It sounds like he has found an interesting replacement.
Manchester’s Bradley Rea, 20-1 (10 KOs), has agreed to step into the breach and fight Dos Santos, 22-1 (10 KOs). The Frenchman’s EBU title will still be on the line.
Earlier this year, the 27 year-old thought he had snared the opportunity of a lifetime when he was matched with Sweden’s Constantino Nanga on the undercard of the undisputed light heavyweight title rematch between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.
His dream was shattered when a shoulder injury forced Nanga to withdraw from the Saudi Arabian showpiece.
Rea - who has reeled off six consecutive wins since losing an English middleweight title to Tyler Denny in November 2022 - had been expecting to receive news about a fight for the vacant English 175lb title but jumped at the opportunity to step in and replace Pitters.
34 year-old Dos Santos won the vacant EBU title by outpoint his countryman, Thomas Faure, last June and the fight with Rea will be his first defence.
