But the WBC lightweight champion is also particularly excited about the thought of a long-discussed dance with WBC junior welterweight champion in recess Devin Haney.
“We could make the [Haney] fight,” Stevenson said on Jamel Herring’s podcast “Bet On Yourself.”
“It’s all up to Devin, too. I’m willing to fight any fighter. They called me three times to negotiate. I’m willing to go up to 140 because I think Devin Haney is an attraction to the public, and I think it would make sense.”
Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) has also been linked to a fight against Gervonta Davis, but, for now, he’s solely focused on Schofield, who emerged as a surprise replacement opponent after Zepeda needed time to recover from a hand injury.
“Whatever you’ve seen of me, you’re going to see a better version on February 22,” said Stevenson. “A lot of casual fans know this kid [Schofield], and they think he’s a good fighter. I also want to beat on who the casuals like. If the casuals like this guy. I’m going to beat on a casual’s favorite.
“I’ve been wiser to know to focus on the moment. It’s good for them to have the plans and say it to the public, but I’m more so focused on this kid first just because I know if I don’t get past him first, I can’t go to the next.”
Stevenson, a three-division titleholder and the No. 3-rated lightweight by Ring Magazine, is also recovering from a surgically repaired right hand. He was supposed to fight Joe Cordina in October as part of his Matchroom Boxing debut but was forced to pull out due to the injury.
“I’m not 100% but I’m at 90%, 95%, and as I keep working at it, it’ll get to 100,” said Stevenson. “I think you’re going to see a better version of the best version you’ve seen of me.”
Stevenson vs. Schofield will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on the undercard of the rematch between undisputed light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.
