The 2016 Olympic silver medalist and four-division champion doesn’t plan on ending his career at 140 pounds. In terms of when he’ll make the move up in weight, he isn’t entirely sure.

What he does know, however, is that his eventual welterweight journey will represent the last division he attempts to conquer.

“I think for sure I’m gonna be at 147,” Stevenson said during a recent interview on the Cigar Talk YouTube channel. “That’s gonna be the last weight class that I go to.”

Stevenson, 29, got his hands on The Ring and WBO junior welterweight titles thanks to his win over Teofimo Lopez on January 31 in the main event of “The Ring 6” at Madison Square Garden in New York. Although he hasn’t defended those belts just yet, Stevenson (25-0, 11 KOs) wants to make a semi-jump in weight to face Devin Haney at a catch weight of 144 pounds.

Haney, The Ring’s No. 1-ranked welterweight and WBO champion, was initially ordered by the sanctioning body to face Keyshawn Davis, his No. 1 contender and former mandatory challenger. Davis removed himself from the process Friday – a day after his promoter, Top Rank Inc., won a purse bid – leaving Haney (33-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC) without a dance partner.

It’s been a eight months since the 27-year-old Haney fought. The three-division champion started his 147-pound title reign thanks to a unanimous-decision win over Brian Norman Jr. (29-1, 23 KOs, 1 NC) on November 22 at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Weight continues to be a sticking point in a possible bout between Haney and Stevenson.

When it comes to fighting at the welterweight limit of 147, Stevenson knows that he’ll get there at some point. For now, he won’t let Haney or anyone else push him higher in weight than he wants to compete.

“I would fight the dude, but why do I have to go to his weight class?” Stevenson asked. “Imma get there.”
