It has been a while since Tyson Fury's trainer SugarHill Steward has seen this version of him.
With training camp winding down, Steward has got flashbacks to how Fury looked during his preparation for Dillian Whyte in April 2022.
Fury dominated and stopped Whyte in the sixth round to retain his Ring and WBC heavyweight titles. The former titleholder returns to the ring on April 11 after a 15-month layoff, facing Arslanbek Makhmudov at London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Netflix.
"Tyson Fury has been the weakness to a lot of fighters throughout his career," Steward said. "I remember training him for the Whyte fight. He's got that kind of energy, attitude, hunger to go out there, be exciting and to be back in the ring again."
Steward, nephew of Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward, has trained Fury since his Deontay Wilder rematch, which he won after seven one-sided rounds in February 2020.
Fury (34-2-1, 23 KOs) has gone 2-2 since stopping Whyte. He stopped Derek Chisora in the 10th round of their trilogy bout in December 2022, before climbing off the canvas to win a razor-thin split decision against former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou on Saudi shores in October 2023.
The 6-foot-9 Englishman looked better in his two fights against former undisputed and current unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (24-0, 15 KOs). However, he lost by split decision in May 2024 and then by unanimous decision in their rematch seven months later. Usyk is The Ring's No. 1-ranked fighter, pound-for-pound.
Makhmudov (21-2, 19 KOs) has won two straight fights since suffering a eighth-round stoppage defeat by Guido Vianello in August 2024. The 6-foot-5 ½ Russian last fought on Oct. 11, proving a wide winner against British heavyweight David Allen in enemy territory in Sheffield, England.
Makhmudov's only other loss was a fourth-round stoppage against The Ring's No. 2-ranked heavyweight contender and current WBC interim titleholder Agit Kabayel (27-0, 19 KOs) in December 2023.
As far as Fury is concerned, Makhmudov serves as a precursor to a more significant bout later this year, though anything can happen when heavyweights of their size face one another. To that point, Steward is happy with what he's seen from Fury throughout their Thailand training camp before his latest return.
“He’s moving good,” Steward said. “He’s feeling good mentally and physically. He’s in a very happy place.”
