Devin Haney looked comfortable when he dethroned Brian Norman Jr. to become a three-division world champion.
However, there’s a possibility that he won't be staying in the welterweight division for long.
According to Bill Haney, his father and trainer, his son could be enticed to move up in weight. With Xander Zayas knocking off Abass Baraou to become the WBA and WBO junior middleweight champion, the Haneys view him as a fighter worth moving up for.
“Being a four-division champ has a luster and appeal legacy component in there,” Bill Haney said to Tha Boxing Voice. “With Xander having a country behind him like Puerto Rico, it makes for an exciting story.”
Zayas, 23, is now the youngest unified champion in the sport. It’s a distinction he’s proud of, but becoming the youngest undisputed champion sounds even better. So, the Puerto Rican native is keeping an eye on the rest of his fellow champions.
Sebastian Fundora, the division’s WBC belt holder, has a date lined up with Keith Thurman on March 28 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Josh Kelly, the newly crowned IBF champion, is fresh off his upset win over Bakhram Murtazaliev and is reportedly looking to unify as well.
With those sorts of options on the table, a fight with Devin Haney may not be as attractive. However, to sweeten the deal, Bill revealed that his son would be willing to pack his bags and head to Puerto Rico to give Zayas the home-field advantage.
“Yes,” Haney Sr. continued when asked if they would fight him in Puerto Rico. “We would consider that.”
As for how the actual fight would play out in the ring, Zayas has seemingly got better and better over the years. Still, despite his improvement and regardless of the size advantage he would have in a possible matchup, Bill doesn’t believe he would pose much of a threat to his son.
“Xander is food,” Haney Sr. added. “He’s a great fighter, but he is food to us.”
