Terence Crawford's comfort fighting effectively from orthodox and southpaw stances has made him one of the best boxers of his generation.
Terence Crawford is a prolific switch-hitter.
But if you ask him, no one has done it better, effortlessly switching back and forth from southpaw to orthodox during a fight.
“I think that I am the best switch-hitter ever,” Crawford said on Netflix's two-part countdown program documenting the buildup to the fight. “There isn't a fighter that I can think of that can do it so naturally and can fight at a peak level, whether being an orthodox or southpaw.
“Is there a fighter in the world that can beat Bud Crawford? I ain’t come across him yet. Everything happens for a reason. And I truly and firmly believe that I am in this position to become a three-time undisputed champion of the world. History will be made … I think a lot of people will be surprised on fight night.”
During Crawford’s career-best win and three-knockdown performance against Errol Spence Jr. in July 2023, he claimed he made the call to fight as a lefty minutes before in the dressing room. He labeled the decision as his key to victory.
Crawford is remaining coy when it comes to sharing the tactics he has planned for Alvarez, but he’s carefully posting curated photos of his transformed physique, which featured eight-pack abs eight days before the fight.
“I think what separates me from everyone else is my mentality, my work ethic, my risk-taking,” said Crawford. “I'm still sharpening my tools, but at the same time I am learning on the job. … I don’t ever want to feel like I am done learning.
“When people talk about Terence Crawford, they don’t talk about how I overcame all of the odds. I had to go through so much to get to where I am now. I wouldn’t want it any other way. They doubted me. They didn’t give me a chance. They thought that I was going to be a statistic. I overcame so many obstacles and life lessons that they can’t do anything but respect it.”
The undersized Crawford will be a betting underdog for the first time in his Hall-of-Fame career. But such is the case against a fellow generational great because he’s climbing up two weight classes after just one fight at 154 pounds last year, following a five-year run at 147 pounds.
“It doesn't matter how I got to the table. I got to the table and we are going to make history,” Crawford said. “I want to be remembered as one of the all-time greats. I have to go through Canelo to do it. A win would put me on Mount Rushmore.
“I think I already established myself as one of the all-time greats. God doesn’t make mistakes. There is a reason why I am here. It’s all part of his plan.”
