Terence Crawford Envisions Stopping Canelo Alvarez: 'Anything Is Possible'

Terence Crawford's 11-fight knockout streak ended last summer, but the four-division world champion nonetheless believes he can make a statement by doing what many feel he cannot — hurting a much bigger Canelo Alvarez in their megafight.
Many of boxing's most respected figures are giving Terence Crawford a serious chance to upset the much bigger Canelo Alvarez when they square off for the undisputed super middleweight championship Sept. 13. at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Netflix.
But can the betting underdog Crawford knock out a fighter who has historically handled all kinds of artillery thrown at him?
“Anything is possible,” Crawford told reporters. “I just have to fight my fight. … Canelo has a granite chin, but he's been hurt before. He's been hit cleanly, and he took it well. … I've been an underdog my entire life. I feel good, comfortable, I'm confident. This isn't an unfamiliar place for me.”
During the buildup of the bout, Crawford has been adamant that size won’t matter, Alvarez isn’t a machine, and he has all of the skills to beat him, even if he doesn’t stop him.
Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) can also crack, as evidenced by an 11-fight knockout streak that ended in his last fight when he beat Israil Madrimov by unanimous decision for the WBA 154-pound title in his division debut.
Crawford wasn’t able to hurt Madrimov, and it would appear unlikely that he’d be able to drop Alvarez while jumping two weight classes.
After all, Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) has absorbed the power of knockout artist Gennadiy Golovkin for 36 rounds and has fought twice as a light heavyweight without getting rocked, stopping Sergey Kovalev in 2019 and dropping a decision against Dmitry Bivol in 2022.
However, Alvarez hasn’t been operating at the peak of his powers in recent years. He hasn’t notched a knockout since stopping Caleb Plant in 2021, when he was the pound-for-pound king.
Seven decisions have followed, including an unspectacular one May 4 when Alvarez edged William Scull.
“I don't know what was up with that fight,” Crawford said. “The Scull fight is not a fight that I really look into because Canelo is a great fighter. One bad performance doesn't define a fighter, given the circumstances of his previous fights.
"We are looking forward to Canelo being the best Canelo that he could be. Scull may not have made him get to that point where he felt danger to get to that deeper level of training, or taking the fight as seriously as he's taking this fight.”
