Terence Crawford Opens Up On Retirement: 'I'm 38, That's Old For Boxing'

Terence Crawford, 38, says age played a key role in his decision to walk away from the ring.
Terence Crawford’s decision to retire felt odd.
The native of Omaha, Nebraska, looked as good as ever during his super middleweight win over Canelo Alvarez on September 13. Yet, even after becoming the first male boxer in the four-belt era to be undisputed champion in three divisions, he has announced he's walking away.
His reasons? One is simple: age.
“I’m 38,” Crawford told Adin Ross, a popular online streamer. “38 is old in boxing. I been boxing since I was 7.”
Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs) considered trying his hand at the middleweight division. And Alvarez and his team revealed that their first and only priority would be a rematch with Crawford.
Ultimately, though, Crawford seems content. His trophy case is already stacked to the brim. And, in light of the fact that his resume has been the target of criticism for years, he believes he’ll never get the respect he deserves no matter who he beats.
“I have nothing else to prove,” Crawford said. “I have nothing else to accomplish. What more can I do? They're not gonna give me the credit anyway, so it really doesn't even matter.”
