There were contrasting world championship title defenses in Cleveland last weekend as moves were made in three weight divisions following a quieter week across the globe.
WBO lightweight champion Abdullah Mason's 12th-round stoppage win over former sparring partner Albert Bell, a short-notice opponent, garnered plenty of reaction within The Ring's voting panel as to his standing at 135 pounds.
Still only 22, the Top Rank-backed rising star delivered late when called upon and reinforced his ability to dig deep when things get tough, as was the case in winning the belt against Sam Noakes on November 22.
Bruce Carrington (18-0, 10 KOs) largely bossed proceedings, besides an 11th-round body shot, en route to a wide points win over Rene Palacios to retain his WBC featherweight crown.
The 29-year-old continues to call for unifications at 126 pounds, though it's easier said than done in a weight class that has never had an undisputed king. Three weight classes have alterations this week, so scroll down to read the breakdown and continue for some interesting fight-related intel.

Lightweight
Abdullah Mason swaps places with Andy Cruz, advancing to No. 4. Floyd Schofield remains at No. 6, despite a year-long stretch of inactivity with an August WBA title fight slated against Lucas Bahdi.
  • C (vacant)
  • 1 SHAKUR STEVENSON U.S. 25-0-0 (11 KOs)
  • 2 RAYMOND MURATALLA IBF U.S. 24-0-0 (17 KOs)
  • 3 WILLIAM ZEPEDA Mexico 33-1-0 (27 KOs)
  • 4 ABDULLAH MASON WBO 21-0-0 (18 KOs)
  • 5 ANDY CRUZ Cuba 6-1-0 (3 KOs)
  • 6 FLOYD SCHOFIELD U.S. 19-0-0 (13 KOs)
  • 7 SAM NOAKES U.K. 18-1-0 (16 KOs)
  • 8 LUCAS BAHDI Canada 20-0-0 (15 KOs)
  • 9 JADIER HERRERA Cuba 18-0-0 (16 KOs)
  • 10 JOE CORDINA U.K. 19-1-0 (9 KOs)
Featherweight
Angelo Leo, much like Schofield, remains ranked despite a year's inactivity. He is granted extra time to make a title defense after his May 9 bout against Ra'eese Aleem was canceled after the challenger failed to make weight.
Carrington overtakes him in the only divisional change.
  • C (vacant)
  • 1 RAFAEL ESPINOZA WBO Mexico 28-0-0 (24 KOs)
  • 2 BRUCE CARRINGTON WBC U.S. 18-0-0 (10 KOs)
  • 3 ANGELO LEO IBF U.S. 26-1-0 (12 KOs)

  • 8 MIRCO CUELLO Argentina 16-0-0 (13 KOs)
  • 9 RA'EESE ALEEM U.S. 23-1-0 (12 KOs)
  • 10 CRISTOBAL LORENTE Spain 21-0-3 (8 KOs)
No movement at 112 pounds, though Galal Yafai (9-0, 7 KOs) remains at No. 4 after sustaining an undisclosed training injury before his proposed title challenge of unified beltholder Ricardo Sandoval (27-2, 18 KOs) last month. Sandoval, who beat Kenshiro Teraji on July 30, will have the same applied in his case when the time comes.
Junior Flyweight
Unlike the aforementioned trio, who all have fights booked or are rehabbing injuries, Cristian Araneta (25-3, 20 KOs) departs the 108-pound class through inactivity. Sources contacted in the Philippines suggest his absence will continue for a while yet, and so Mexico's Aaron de la Cruz enters the fray.

Panel comments
Anson Wainwright – “Abdullah Mason (5) struggled to figure Albert Bell out early but came on strong in the second half and got the final-round stoppage. I give him credit for closing the show but I think keep him where he is for now...”
Adam Abramowitz – “I’d move Mason over Cruz. Mason beat a good fighter yesterday. Cruz really doesn’t have any top wins at 135.”
Ben Damon, Doug Fischer and Abraham Gonzalez all agree with Abramowitz. Abraham Gonzalez asks if Jai Opetaia will be given until year's end to fight a top-five ranked cruiserweight, with Zuffa's schedule booked through August.
Wainwright – “I think it will be interesting to see when Opetaia returns who it's against. I guess we leave him for a little longer, but as we discussed nobody is in any rush to face him and it would be a shame to strip him when it's out of his hands.”
Gonzalez – “Okay. Update. So Jai Opetaia is being penciled to return in the fall. Maybe as soon as September.”
Stephen Fulton and Luis Alberto Lopez, both Ring-rated at 126 pounds, are among those mentioned for an update forthcoming. Fulton will box Liam Wilson at junior lightweight on the Tim Tszyu-Errol Spence undercard this month, while news is expected on Lopez's next move shortly.
