Tim Bradley isn’t so sure it was a good idea for Abdullah Mason to accept a late-replacement opponent.
Especially someone as good as Albert Bell.
After Joe Cordina, Mason’s original opponent, failed to make it stateside due to visa issues, Bell happily accepted the fight when it was offered to him. The 33-year-old had been training for a bout against Andy Cruz on July 18, but he couldn’t pass on the opportunity to fight for Mason’s WBO lightweight title and receive a big payday.
They're scheduled to fight July 4 at Wolstein Center in Cleveland. The card will be streamed live on DAZN and broadcast on TNT.
According to oddsmakers, Bell (28-0, 9 KOs) is in over his head. But Bradley, the Hall of Fame boxer-turned-TV analyst, has dissected Bell’s game from top to bottom. He believes the highly ranked contender has all of the tools to push Mason.
“This could be a possible upset, man,” Bradley said on his YouTube channel, "Timothy Desert Storm Bradley Jr." “If the fight is close, the business might get in the way. Mason might just get a close decision. However, Albert Bell, this is your opportunity. You have to step on him.”
Stepping on Mason might be difficult. The Ring’s No. 5-ranked 135-pounder has mostly steamrolled the competition. And at the age of 22, it appears he's just getting started.
Bell has a perfect record but hasn’t fought top-tier competition in 13 years as a professional. Still, Bradley believes he's seen enough from Bell to understand how good he is.
The tall, lanky contender is as talented as they come, Bradley believes. If Mason (20-0, 17 KOs) wants to win, he will need to bring his "A" game to get it done.
“No matter what happens, I think we're going to get a better understanding of Abdullah Mason and his talent after this particular fight,” Bradley said. “He’s never faced a guy with this much skill, high range, ability, and experience.”
