Tim Tszyu doesn’t have a lot of enemies but the scale might be his number one adversary.
For years, the talented Aussie made the junior middleweight limit with relative ease, but now that he’s gotten a bit older, his body isn’t as cooperative as it once was.
A few weeks ago, however, Tszyu (25-2, 18 KOs) made another arduous weight cut. Once he did what he had to do, he went out there and destroyed Joseph Spencer, stopping him in just four rounds.
By and large, Tszyu has big plans. He wants to avenge his losses against Sebastian Fundora and Bakhram Murtazaliev. He also wants to aggregate every 154-pound title to become an undisputed champion.
Unfortunately for the 30-year-old, getting those things done might be practically impossible. It isn’t because he’s incapable of competing with the best but mostly due to the timeline he’s currently working on.
“If I can do one more year, then yea,” said Tszyu when asked by a group of reporters how much longer he plans on sticking around the junior middleweight division.
In all likelihood, Tszyu will jump in there with Keith Thurman before the year comes to a close. They were originally scheduled to get it on in early 2024 before the perpetually injured Thurman was forced to pull out. That was the first fallen domino for Tszyu on his string of bad luck.
But, all of that is in the past. The former WBO belt holder doesn’t want to spend more time discussing his listless performances and simply wants to focus on his future. Thurman might be in his immediate plans but the 160-pound landscape looks incredibly enticing. So, with a chance to become a two-division champ, don’t be surprised if Tszyu makes the move incredibly soon.
“At middleweight, there’s big names like (Erislandy) Lara, (Carlos) Adames, (Jermall) Charlo. It’s a red hot division.”
