After an eight-week training block in Miami under Pedro Diaz, former WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu is back home again.
The 31-year-old hopes for a more impressive showing and conclusive ending against Albania's unbeaten contender Denis Nurja (20-0, 9 KOs) when headlining another show down Under at Wollongong's WIN Entertainment Centre.
Less than an hour away from the suburb of Rockdale where he resides, the fan favorite was dominant but often one-paced against Anthony Velazquez on December 17. Judging from his comments after an open workout last week, there's method behind his new routine.
"This camp has been completely different because I've had to learn different things, methods, game plans, technical and tactical stuff," Tszyu said in a press release.
"Looking back on some of my old sparring, I was sometimes a sitting duck and can see that now. I've seen the lessons and it's about improving, developing a new style. That's why I took this fight. I believe in my skills, know what I'm capable of and the world is in my hands, so I'm going to take it with both."
The former world champion said he's been working on sharpening his fundamentals and knowing when to rein in a tendency to be aggressive, which has cost him dearly at the elite level in recent years.
"I've shown cojones all the time and when it gets rough and dirty, I know when to bring it out. I know I've got that up my sleeve at all times but do I need to expose it in round one straight away? No, I don't, it's all about timing. I'm still the same old Tim Tszyu but feel like you need to keep learning."
Miami-based head coach Pedro Diaz, who he announced as his new trainer in October, joined camp earlier after being busy helping Noel Mikaelian win back the WBC cruiserweight world title from Badou Jack on Dec. 14.
Diaz said the additional time has deepened their work technically and they're excited to see what more he has in store. While chief among the new team in Tszyu's rebuild phase, these comments are in direct contrast to the concerning mood was eight months ago after a more decisive ending against Sebastian Fundora in their rematch.
"Everyone knows he is a great boxer, has amazing discipline and because he is and we have a clear plan, we have already been able to achieve great things together," Diaz said.
"Tim was able to show new tools [against Velazquez], prove that he is not just someone who goes into the ring to fight. He showed he can box as well, worked very well with his lead hand and went 10 rounds at a very high level. He has grown a lot and still has exciting things to show the boxing world."
"We are always working on the best tools he can use to get the best result. He is a fast and strong boxer, but we have worked a lot on his defence, angles, lateral movement and his lead hand. I think he is doing a great job. I want to see the work from training come through in the fight, to show the world that he still has a lot to offer in boxing."
Diaz is aware that Nurja has a point to prove in his career-best opportunity, though they remain confident the work will speak for itself in a 160-pound bout for a WBO middleweight trinket belt.
Relatively unknown, the 32-year-old warned against overlooking him, especially with a lucrative fight against former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr (28-1, 22 KOs) potentially awaiting the Aussie this summer.
"This is the type of moment I have been working towards since I was a young boy. I respect Tszyu and what he has done but am coming to show the world who I am. When I step into the ring, people will see my level," he warned in press release quotes last week.
