Tim Tszyu has a tremendous sample size, albeit tumultuous, dealing with Sebastian Fundora.
Fundora last fought in July, forcing Tszyu into submission during a sequel following his March 2024 bloodbath and split decision win.
"The Towering Inferno" Fundora (23-1-1, 15 KOs) is looking to engulf his next opponent in flames, defending the WBC junior middleweight title against Keith Thurman (31-1, 23 KOs) on Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to headline a Prime Video PPV event.
Tszyu shared his sentiment on how Thurman can potentially handle The Ring's No. 2-ranked 154-pounder.
“Fundora is a bit of a nightmare, but he’s also easy to hit," Tszyu told PBC. "He’s also tough as hell; he gets hit and keeps coming. It’s hard to be strategic. When you fight Fundora, expect that you’re gonna be in one of the hardest fights.
“Fundora’s biggest advantage is the number of punches he throws in a round. It’s the fact that he doesn’t let anyone rest. Because he’s so tall, he’s able to just punch and punch without using too much energy. That’s his biggest strength."
Tszyu (26-3, 18 KOs) had an incredibly difficult time dealing with the 6-foot, 5 ½ inch Fundora’s length in the rematch, getting knocked down in the first round before quitting on his stool after seven rounds. The performance was a far stretch from their first fight in which Tszyu battled through a nasty gash on his head and fought until the final bell for a split decision defeat.
Tszyu elaborated on what went wrong in the one-sided rematch.
“I was just throwing haymakers without even looking and every time that happened I was swinging at air," said Tszyu.
"Because of his reach, his awkwardness and that he can take a step back and be completely out of the way, he’s got big strengths. The most challenging part was that there was no wasted energy from him. The amount of work that I had to do in a round, compared to him, my energy was much more wasted.”
Oddsmakers expect Fundora, who is installed as a -380 betting favorite, to outlast the +280 betting underdog Thurman.
