Emiliano Vargas accomplished significant accolades before even stepping into the ring this year.
The second-generation star was named The Ring’s 2025 Prospect of the Year and even made a cameo during the Super Bowl halftime show, but none of that mattered Saturday when he faced Agustin Quintana in what amounted to be the toughest test of his fast-ascending career.
Vargas (17-0, 14 KOs) aced another step-up exam with flying colors by busting the entire face of Quintana (22-3-1, 13 KOs), forcing referee Raul Caiz Jr. to end the junior welterweight clash before the 10th and final round got underway.
After giving a solid account of himself in the middle rounds, Quintana was fading and getting crushed toward the end. With no signs of quitting, blood pouring from three cuts across his face, and the fight getting out of hand, Caiz took it upon himself to wave off the clash.
Quintana, a 29-year-old Argentinian, stormed off his stool after the decision, walked around the ring, pounded his gloves on the top ropes and kicked air.
"He's a hell of a fighter who came to fight, and that's what it's about," said Vargas. "I could feel him wearing down. I'm meant for the championship rounds … I think it was a C performance for me. I got caught with a couple of things that I should not have gotten caught with as I was trying to go for the knockout. But that's what experience is for.”
Quintana came in with previous experience playing prospect buster after handing Marc Castro his first loss in 2024. But Vargas, 21, the son of former two-time junior middleweight champion Fernando Vargas, proved he was a different breed.
Vargas relied on a tremendous body attack, but everything was seemingly working. Vargas cut Quintana on his right cheekbone and right eyebrow in the fourth. By the end of that round, 50 of the 77 punches Vargas had landed were on Quintana’s body.
The incredibly gritty Quintana was undeterred, however, and asserted himself in Rounds 5-7. He kept up with connected shots (60-59) before Vargas kicked the action into second gear and unleashed a vicious attack in the eighth round.
Fighting for just the second time past the sixth round in his four-year career, Vargas went head-hunting in the frame and landed a fight-high 32 punches. The onslaught cut Quintana’s left eyebrow, which prompted Caiz to summon a ringside physician to inspect him before the ninth.
The fight was over after three more minutes of vicious punishment from Vargas.
Vargas closed the show in style and outlanded Quintana 193-123 in the fight, according to CompuBox.
“I just want to keep on learning,” said Vargas. “All of these other champions are older. I'm a young gun, but I am coming for all the dogs. I'm young, I'm hungry, and I am happy to be here.
“I want a former world champion in my next fight, no doubt. I feel that I will grow in every fight and continue to learn. I just want to become a world champion.”
Vargas versus Quintana served as the co-main event for the junior lightweight title unification bout between Emanuel Navarrete and Eduardo Nunez at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, to headline a Matchroom Boxing show on DAZN.
